What happens when the narrator has to pay the bill at the eating house? The narrator gives him the worthless bank note and leaves. The landlord sees the bank note and begs him to keep eating at his establishment. The landlord doesn't believe the narrator when he shows him the bank note, and so he throws him out. The landlord is shocked at the note and lets the man forgo paying the bill because the landlord cannot make change.
