Then, Jason Witty turned toward the sea and solemnly scattered the ashes of his grandfather, Eugene Morgan, over the Pacific Ocean. Witty stood at roughly the same location where his grandfather, who fought in World War II, had survived a military attack. That attack killed a majority of Morgan's shipmates 63 years earlier.
