In the past, people in Sri Lanka used elephants for logging because the animals are so strong. In recent years, however, machines have proven more efficient for logging, and now only about 40 elephants work in the industry. Others are used for carrying tourists through the streets, while still more are being made into professional athletes. Elephant owners say that the massive animals are expensive to maintain. Elephants must earn their keep and the salaries of their mahouts, or caretakers. Do It!

In Sri Lanka, working elephants are not as as they used to be.
