Passage 1 According to a biblical story, a father once divided his inheritance between his two sons. The younger son left home and spent his share on wasteful and luxurious things. After he spent his fortune, he returned to his father. He begged his father to hire him as a servant so that he wouldn’t have to go hungry. The father, however, quickly forgave the son and asked his servants to dress him in rich clothing. To celebrate his son's return, he asked his servants to slaughter a fattened calf for a celebratory meal. The younger son in the story is often referred to as the prodigal son.

Passage 2
The first thing Maddison noticed as she entered Earl's Diner was the new barstools and counter. But then her attention moved to the walls, the ceiling, the lighting, the waitresses, and even the menu. Everything had undergone a drastic change.

The owner of the diner stood behind the counter. "So, what do you think?" he asked a bit anxiously. “I just inherited some money from my dad and thought I’d use it to fix up this place.”

"Earl, you must be your father’s prodigal son," Maddison said, as she glanced again at the whole diner.
