Read the excerpts from the story Westward Adventures: Chapter 1: All Aboard!

Sally gripped her sister's hand as the train filled the small platform with clouds of steam and dust. The whistle was the loudest sound Sally had ever heard, and she wished she could put her hands over her ears. She looked down at her younger sister, Beth. The little girl was trying not to cry. Sally could see her lip quivering and the tears filling her eyes.

"It'll be okay," she said, squeezing her hand. "It's going to be a wonderful adventure. Just think about how happy Father will be to see us!"

"I don't remember what Father looks like," Beth whispered. "He's been gone a long time."

"Come on," Sally said. "Let's find our seats."

"All aboard!" shouted the conductor. "Non-stop from Omaha to Sacramento."

Sally and Beth settled into the cushioned seats, their suitcases stashed under their chairs. Sally stared out the dusty window at the flat, sun-baked landscape. She wondered how different life would be in California. Their father had left them with their grandparents in Omaha while he traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. She took his last letter from her pocket and read it for the hundredth time.

Chapter 2: Welcome to California

After a three-day train ride, Sally was relieved to hear the conductor call out, "Ladies and gentlemen, please gather your belongings. We will be arriving in Sacramento within the hour."

"I can't wait to get off this train!" Beth whined. "It's boring."

"You shouldn't have read all your books on the first day," Sally told her. "Besides, three days is short compared to how long it used to take. People traveled for months to go the same distance before they built the railway."

"I just wish we had more cookies," Beth grumbled. She sighed and leaned back in her seat. "And I can't wait to sleep in a proper bed."

Sally watched the landscape change outside the window. Lush, green fields became rocky hills as the train climbed higher. They rattled over a bridge that made her want to shut her eyes. The river was a long way below. They passed many farms as they approached the town. Sally couldn't believe how green everything was.

Biologists recognize five levels of cell organization. the lowest and simplest is the cellular level. organisms here are either unicellular organisms, like protozoa, or colonial organisms. colonial organisms are composed of single-celled individuals that stay together to sustain the life of the whole colony. next on the scale of complexity is the level occupied by tissue. a tissue is a group of similar cells which perform a similar activity. tissues that are organized around a common function together make up an organ, the third level of complexity. the fourth level of organization is the system, formed by a group of organs which together perform a specific bodily process. the fifth and highest level is the organism level, in which body systems work together in a structure capable of independent life. main idea:
