If I'm writing in first person, can I speak directly to the reader? Example:
Imagine your whole life completely messed up on your birthday. Imagine all your friends and family treating you completely differently than before. Now, imagine law enforcement hunting you down for serious crimes that you commit. Your whole life and future, destroyed. That was the exact scenario I was in, but many times worse. It was during my birthday, July 4,1980.
