After reading the poem, I get the feeling that Dharker is showing the reader that the people in the poem are exceptionally weak before the water arrives. This is shown in the poem when Dharker uses the simile âskin cracked like a podâ. This demonstrates to the reader that the people waiting for the water are suffering and their skin is weak because there isnât enough water to drink. Within the simile, Dharker uses the word âcracksâ to show that their skin is broken. This
emphasises that the skin is damaged and so itâs made the people weak and frail. Overall this would make the reader feel sympathy for the people almost begging for water.
