America has always been referred to as "her" or "she." I've never given much thought to it, but I think there might be a reason.

Women used to have very limited rights. Women had to fight for things like voting rights, and the rights to work jobs that previously only men could.

By referring to America as a "she," Claude McKay refers to how women fought to gain their rights, how they flourished.

America fought to gain independence, and they flourished by being a country that accepted all races.

Just like women, America fought and flourished.

This is just my thinking.

I have never learned anything about this in the past, so I'm just going off of some facts I learned in grade school.
