Waverly's mother demonstrates pride in her daughter in all of the following ways except

The mother is so proud of her Chinese culture and wants to sticks to it, as apposed to Waverly who wants to fit in with the rest of society. The mother also makes Waverly work for her answers, she thinks it is helping her daughter when she says “find out why yourself”. The mother is very proud of Waverly, but Waverly is embarrassed of her mother showing her off. The language technique that shows how mother and daughter differ is the dialogue used. The mother uses broken English and Waverly can speak proper, fluent English, for example “She not want it. We not want it”, compared to Waverly who speaks more fluently, “Ma’ what’s Chinese torture?”
