7 Jefferson documented his admiration for mockingbirds in his many letters and journal entries. These pieces of history verify, or confirm, Jefferson's belief that the mockingbird is superior to other birds. He often challenged his friends and associates to find a European bird that could sing as sweetly as the American mockingbird.
