They were also shipped up the Mississippi River. Many of them were tortured, forced into hard labor and raped.  Thousands were lynched and freedom fighters were beaten. These truths complicate the idea of melting pot because the atrocities that were committed are a dent on the history of America, especially New Orleans despite the fact that New Orleans is a city of many nations, a melting pot.
