What did city-states in sumer have in common?

City-states in summer are often over populated. When it is the capital you feel like there are many people in a crowded space.

While there was a lot in common with the Sumerian city-states, they struggled for possession of river water, a precious resource. To defend itself from its neighbours, each town-state needed an army.
