(1) Competition in the theater world is fierce. (2) Whenever the school play directors post auditions, nearly one hundred students show up to compete for only ten or twelve good speaking roles. (3) Odds like that can make enemies out of good friends, but Laura my very best friend, and I were different. (4) We cheered each other on from the wings, even when we auditioned for the same role. 5) We prepared for auditions together, and it seemed as though we always won the roles we wanted, or roles we learned to love. (6) Some of the other girls looked down at us, mostly in jealousy, but they forgot their disappointment once rehearsals began. (7) And then Laura moved away.
(8) At first, I just missed her friendship. (9) Talking with her at lunch and at the bus stop, and I missed catching up with her at the end of the day. (10) But when the drama director posted the notice about the spring musical, I instinctively turned to look for my friend and acting partner, and she wasn’t there.
