What is onomatopoeia? When a word sounds like the thing it describes. In other words, when words mimic sounds. Think about a bursting balloon or an exploding kernel of corn. What sound do they make? A pop! We also use the word "pop" as a verb to describe these actions. The balloon pops. We pop the corn. To get the full effect of onomatopoetic words, it helps to say them out loud. Say, "The bacon sizzled on the stove." Can you almost hear it cooking? Which of these is an example of onomatopoeia?

A
using the word "blue" to describe the color of the sky

B
using the word "floral" to describe the smell of perfume

C
using the word "chocolatey" to describe the taste of a cake

D
using the word "screech" to describe the sound of nails scratching a chalkboard
