My hands were raw from the ropes. I could tell that I had a hole in the left knee of my jeans, but I was determined not to quit. I looked up and saw my brother standing on top of the rock. He’d made it up faster than I did, but that didn’t matter. My brother was a natural at climbing. I had never rock-climbed before, and I was set on making it up by myself without help. Dad says that I’m as stubborn as a mule. I hoped that my stubbornness would help me make it to the top. My dad, standing at the bottom of the rock, shouted up words of encouragement. I had to strain to catch them over the whistling of the wind in my ears.
My legs burned with each step. I reached up to find my next handhold and knocked several small rocks loose. I watched them clatter down the cliff. I realized just how far I had climbed. At first, fear gripped me with a tight fist. I was really high! But then, I just felt proud. I had watched my brother climb this very rock before and had always been too scared to try it myself. Now, I was almost to the top. With a surge of energy, I began to climb again.
