(1) Many years ago, chipmunks did not have stripes on their backs as they do now. (2) They were a plain rusty brown all over. (3) This color made it much easier for their enemies to see them. (4) It was very dangerous being a chipmunk in those days. (5) One morning, a cat caught a chipmunk and carried it into the kitchen. (6) When the cat’s owners yelled, the startled cat dropped its prey. (7) Quickly, the chipmunk scooted away and hid behind the woodstove. (8) The peoples were cooking, and the stove was warm. (9) It burned the chipmunk’s fur just a little bit. (10) By the time the chipmunk escaped, it had black, gray, and white stripes all down its back. (11) The chipmunk found that its new colors gave it protection. (12) The stripes looked like bands of shadow and sunlight, making it much easier to hide from predators.
