Personally, when I was a child I grew up with lots of childhood trauma and when I could decide if I wanted to live with my mother or grandparents; it was scary for a 10 year old. I adored my mother but I also wanted to be safe and not scared of her husband (who was abusive). When I went with my grandparents, I fell into a deep depression years on as I missed her. Now that I have grown and I am older, I have realized I have made the better choice as being with a drug addict mother and abusive stepfather would have only made me want to take my life. It was a risk that ended up in my favor as I am still here, getting therapy but I am happy.
