Katherine Johnson was part of a pool of African American women hired to work as mathematical researchers for NACA in 1953. Katherine was quickly chosen to work with engineers because she set herself apart as a strong leader and a gifted mathematician who was eager to learn. Katherine worked more than thirty years for NACA, which later became NASA. She also worked on more recent projects, like the space shuttle program. In 2015, Katherine was awarded with the highest honor to be presented to a U. S. civilian, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
