From an early age, ernest shackleton was drawn to the sea. (3) by age twenty-four, shackleton had qualified to be a ship’s commander. in 1899, he learned that the royal geographical society was organizing an expedition to the antarctic. he volunteered for the venture, led by robert falcon scott, and sailed on the discovery expedition; however, midway through the trip he became ill and was sent home, much to his disappointment. (4) shackleton was an only child and had no pets as a boy.
