that true love often results in sacrifice. The Highwayman loves
Bess, as we see when he says, "One kiss, my bonny
sweetheart," and then he makes her a promise to return to
her after his hunt for gold is over when he says, "Watch for me
by moonlight, I'll come to thee by moonlight. Soon after
the Highwayman leaves Bess, she is held hostage by King
George's men. As they wait on his return with the intent to
shoot him, Bess hears him returning on horseback. Bess
shoots herself to warn the Highwayman of danger. It works,
but the highwayman learns the next day of her death. In
anger, he returns to the inn and is killed too. I was shocked he
did this.
