Why are teachers seen now more as mentors and guides than as dispensers of information? Intergenerational miscommunication between students and teachers has caused teachers to pursue a new role. The 21st century has seen an increase in pay, respect, and autonomy for teachers, so they are given the correspondingly higher responsibility of mentorship. Technology brings massive amounts of information to students' fingertips, so the learning challenge is in using information, not accessing it. Open questions and listening and speaking has elevated students' status and lowered teachers' status such that they now relate as peers.
