Talking to Other Worlds: The Arecibo Observatory
Adapted from www. space. com
5:1:1!1.r
Arecibo Observatory, which is in Puerto Rico,
is the location of the world's second-largest
single-dish radio telescope. While the
observatory serves several purposes
(including tracking potentially dangerous
asteroids), it is perhaps most famous for
being the site of the huge Search for
telescope
Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) message
broadcast into space in 1974.
Arecibo aimed the message at a cluster of stars about 21,000 light years away.
According to SETI, the broadcast would be visible by just about any receiver in
N the galaxy that is about the same size as the antenna at Arecibo.
... In the decades following, SETI has called the message a significant step to
helping understand the challenges of communicating with aliens. "Although it's
unlikely that this short inquiry will ever prompt a reply, the experiment was useful
in getting us to think a bit about the difficulties of communicating across space,
Kime, and a presumably wide culture gap," SETI wrote on its website.
The arecibo message consists, among other things, of the arecibo telescope, our solar system, DNA, a stick figure of
a human, and some of the biochemicals of earthly life.
