John was running late as usual. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't seem to be on time. He had already been late for work twice this week. He couldn't afford to be late again. John hurried through his morning shower. He combed his hair and brushed his teeth as quickly as he could. Then he ran to his bedroom, threw on some clothes and headed downstairs. It was 8:18. He had four minutes to get to the bus stop.

He bent down to tie his shoelaces, and that's where his troubles began. Whenever John tried to do things too fast, he made mistakes. He tied a thick knot. Then he had to spend precious seconds undoing it and retying it. When he finally finished, it was 8:20. He had only two minutes to catch his bus!

John sprinted out the door and ran toward the bus stop. Normally he took three or four minutes to get there. He clenched his fists and ran as fast as he could.
