Explanation:
Activism is the use of individual or group action to cause social change. The desired change may take the form of a passage of a new law or a repeal of an existing law. It may be a change to the practices of a business or other organization, or a change in public opinion. In the United States, activism has promoted changes related to a wide variety of issues. They include voting rights, immigration laws, issues of war and peace, health matters and environmental protection.
Citizens sometimes engage in activism individually. They may write a letter to a newspaper or to a public official, for example. However, activism often involves many people acting together in a coordinated way. At rallies and marches, groups of people proclaim their opinion in a public setting.
A boycott is another form of activism. In a boycott against a business, people protest the actions of a company by refusing to buy its products or services. The purpose of the boycott is not only to voice the opinions of the group. It is also an attempt to get that business to change its actions, usually by threatening the business' profits, as well as generating negative publicity. Â
Campaigns for public office may also be a form of activism, too. A candidate for the office may take stands on a variety of issues. Citizens who agree with the candidate work together to help win the election.
Activism For Sustainability
Activism has proven to be an important tool for promoting sustainable living efforts. For example, in many communities, developers often want to buy small farms or wilderness areas. They want to construct new houses or other buildings on the land. This may disrupt or destroy the existing habitat. Â
Local residents may use the methods of activism to prevent these changes from happening. They can circulate petitions that gather signatures of registered community voters who are also against the proposed development. Then they present these petitions to the town officials. Activists may also attend community planning meetings. There, they can encourage local government officials to either pass new ordinances or strengthen the existing zoning laws. These are laws that communities may use to limit development, as a way to protect the existing environment.
Activism also promotes sustainability issues at national and global levels. In September 2014, over 400,000 people gathered in New York City for the People's Climate March. Their goal was to convince world leaders to take action to fight global climate change. Other marches and rallies against climate change have taken place in cities around the world.
Launching a business that promotes sustainable living is also a form of activism. An example of this type of business was launched in 2013 by University of Illinois at Chicago student Harish Patel. On a trip to India, Patel observed that clothing was often produced by poorly treated workers and through methods that polluted the local environment. Patel had no special skills in business or fashion design. However, he wanted to make a difference in the lives of workers. He recognized that many people in the United States agreed with his goals and were interested in buying attractive, handmade clothing. For these reasons, Patel founded "ishi vest," a line of clothes that are developed in a sustainable way. The clothes are colored with natural dyes. They use organically grown cotton for their lining. The goal of the company is to make a profit while protecting both its workers and the environment.
Organizations For Activism
Many nonprofit organizations promote activism in support of sustainability. Generally, these organizations employ only a few full-time or part-time staff members. The organizations depend on volunteers who contribute money and/or effort.
The Environmental Defense Fund is one example. This group works with government agencies and businesses in the United States on climate and energy, health and ecosystems issues. The Kindling Trust is another. The trust promotes local farms and sustainable agriculture in the United Kingdom. Â
An activism organization called 350.org is an international example. This global group is building a worldwide climate movement. The group supports thousands of activists, who organize actions in over 188 countries. They aim to hold "our leaders accountable to the realities of science and the principles of justice. [This] movement is rising from the bottom up all over the world, and is uniting to create the solutions that will ensure a better future for all." Â
These three organizations accomplish their goals in very different ways. Yet each practices activism in doing so.
