Choose a topic from the list below, use the internet to educate yourself on the pros and cons of a debate within that topic. 3. Choose a side on that debate. Caution: do not try to represent both sides of the debate. You are to clearly stay on one side. The only time that you will ever venture over to address the opposing view is to rebut a critic of your side.

4. Write a 600-700 word, argumentative essay.

For the body paragraphs of this paper, you should not quote your sources, and you should not include a works cited page. There will be time for a formal research paper later in the course. However, you do need to support your views with evidence that is informed by research, and that research should be apparent through paraphrasing. It is important to note here that your evidence should not come in the form of anecdotes, be they personal or about a friend or family member. Then, you must analyze your evidence, explaining how and why it supports your topic sentence and, ultimately, your thesis statement.

Needless to say, you must also follow all rules on plagiarism and academic integrity.

The theme of your third and final paper in the unit is "Literature, language, the arts, crafts, and the media." Here is the list of topics that you have to choose from:

Literature
Non-fiction writing
Language
Performing arts
Visual arts
Applied arts
Arts institutions and venues
Traditional arts and crafts; heritage
Print and digital media
Advertising
Censorship and freedom of the media and the arts
