Both roller skating and ice skating are fun ways to spend time with your friends and get some exercise. With roller skating, you can use roller skates or roller blades. Roller skates have one wheel on each of the four corners of the skate. Roller blades have four wheels down the middle of the shoe. Roller skating can be done on any smooth surface, such as a floor, a street, or a sidewalk.
In contrast, ice skates have a metal blade on the bottom of each shoe. The blade helps the skaters glide along the ice. There are two kinds of ice skates: figure skates and hockey skates. Figure skates have a toe pick, or a sharp end that helps skaters grip the ice and prevent skidding. Hockey skates do not have a toe pick, but they are heavier boots that have a thicker blade. In addition, ice skating must take place on the ice, either at a rink or on a frozen lake.
