When Mark walked into the previously viewed video store, a wave of smelly, musty air made him scrunch his nose in disgust. However, he was glad the indoor air was cool since he was coming in from the outdoor heat.
He was on a mission to find a birthday gift for his grandmother. A week earlier, he and his grandmother saw a movie on TV called Climbing the Tall Mountain. His grandmother did not have a DVR or a DVD player. She had a VCR, a dated machine that plays VHS tapes. Mark knew his grandmother would love to own a copy of Climbing the Tall Mountain, so he walked around the store until he found the store's VHS section.
Just as Mark found the movie on a shelf, his grandmother suddenly called his name from behind. "Well, well!" she exclaimed. "Fancy meeting you here!" she added, sounding like one of the characters in her movies.
Mark was stunned for a moment because he did not want to ruin her birthday surprise. He hugged her gently and said as casually as he could, "This is my first time at this store. I thought I'd come check it out."
"This is a wonderful establishment indeed," his grandmother said. Then she gasped and exclaimed while pointing at the shelf, "It's that movie we saw together! I can't believe it!" She reached up and grabbed the VHS tape of Climbing the Tall Mountain off the shelf. "OK, I'm going to buy this. Would you like me to drive you home, or are you still browsing?"
Mark wanted his grandmother to think that he was still looking for other movies, but he also did not want to lie. "Um . . . "
His grandmother nodded. "Ah, I understand. You need some alone time. Well, I'll see you later, little man." She tousled his hair and walked away.
Mark combed his sweaty hair away from his face and decided that he did not want to walk back home in the heat. He also realized that his mission to find his grandmother's birthday gift had been halted. He walked quickly to the cash register, where his grandmother was purchasing her VHS tape.
"We also accept debit cards and credit cards," the cashier told Mark's grandmother.
"I left my card at home," Mark's grandmother said blankly while she sifted through her purse.
"What's wrong, Grandma?" Mark asked.
"I can't find my checkbook, and I didn't bring any cash with me," she replied nervously.
Mark slowly sighed and decided that he could not surprise his grandmother for her birthday. "Let me pay for your movie, Grandma."
"No, that's all right, honey," his grandmother replied. She emptied out most of her purse onto the cashier's counter.
"Grandma, I was going to buy that for you, for your birthday," Mark admitted. "You just beat me to it."
His grandmother looked up from her purse in shock. "Well, don't that beat all!" she exclaimed and gave him a big hug. Mark paid for the video in cash, accomplishing his mission after all.
