One symbol would be the trowel that Montresor has, because the author uses that to foreshadow what will happen when Montresor bricks in Fortunato in the cellar/catacombs/grave thingies. It makes the story more solemn as it will end up being the tool he uses to suffocate and murder Fortunato. When Fortunato is questioning the narrator about being a Mason, Fortunato most likely is referring to a secret society, while the narrator is talking about being someone who builds walls with cement and bricks. The trowel means a sign of love and affection between the Mason group, while to the narrator, it means a sign of hatred and the foresight of death.
