Read these two accounts, one nonfiction and one fiction, of the Chicago
World's Fair. Then select the statement that best describes how the passages
convey similar information about the event.
Passage A:
The Chicago World's Fair, also known as the World's Columbian
Exposition, was held in Chicago in 1893. Its purpose was to showcase
and celebrate recent advances in architecture, industry, and the arts, as
well as to generally boost American morale and encourage optimism.
Almost 200 buildings were constructed for the fair, designed to
embody an architect's vision of the perfect city. Attractions included
everything from newly invented electrical devices to the first Ferris
wheel and the first commercial movie theater. Not only was the fair
hugely popular while it was still open, the innovations it promoted
remained extremely influential for decades.
Passage B:
James lay awake sweating, tossing, and turning. Years of work would
all be made worth it tomorrow - or his hopes could be shattered. He
could still hardly believe that he had earned a place to exhibit his
invention at the World's Fair. Would the public be interested? Would a
big company want to buy his blueprints, or even give him a job? He
was so nervous about his own small part at the fair that he'd hardly
had time to think about everything else he would see: the amazing new
inventions, the singers, dancers, and people from every country in the
world. But now I must rest," James told himself sternly.
A. Both passages go into detail about how the fair came to be held.
B. Both passages give a sense of how large and important the fair
was.
c. Both passages show how the fair affected ordinary people.
D. Both passages are more logical than emotional in tone.
