The discovery of penicillin was one of the great breakthroughs of modern science. Alexander Fleming, the Scottish scientist, noticed that
certain types of bacteria were killed when exposed to mold. Repeated tests confirmed that this mold (from which penicillin is derived) did indeed
check the growth of many microbes. Since its discovery over 50 years ago, penicillin has been used to treat a variety of diseases and infections.
During World War II, battlefield wounds were treated with penicillin, and thousands of lives were saved. Today, penicillin
is still used in the
