Imagine that, rather than depicting a “frown / And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command” the “shattered visage” on the ground depicted a smile, and curved lip, and grin of warm welcome. Would the theme of the poem—“nothing lasts forever”—remain the same? Why or why not? Would other portions of the poem have to change as well, or could they remain the same?
