Read this excerpt from The Great Fire. As for Goll, he claimed later at the official inquiry into the fire that he had waited for Lee to leave and then turned in the alarm. Goll also insisted he turned in a second alarm when another man appeared ten minutes later to announce that the fire was spreading rapidly. Whether Goll lied about sending the alarms or whether the alarm box failed to work will never be known. What is clear, is that no alarm was recorded at the central alarm office in the Courthouse at the point when the fire was still containable.

How does the structure of this paragraph develop the theme that there were several missed opportunities to stop the fire? Choose the best answer.

1. by explaining the consequences Goll faced for lying about sounding the alarm and alerting the courthouse
2. by explaining how Goll’s apparent refusal to sound the alarm delayed the firefighters
3. by highlighting each of the mistakes, including Goll’s, that were made during the course of the fire
4. by highlighting the fact that Goll did sound the alarm, but it never went off at the central office

What does the author see as the main cause for why students don’t really see shakespeare as a real, flawed human being? we shouldn’t shy away from discussing our literary heroes’ flaws. if nothing else, the knowledge of their failures us appreciate what success and greatness these authors did achieve. often our hero-worship keeps us from truly seeing the complexity of a great author. thus, i would argue, nothing would be better for high school students than to take shakespeare down a peg or two. a) the fact that students never learn enough about shakespeares biography b) the fact that students only read shakespeare’s comedies while in school c) the fact that students are never assigned to read any shakespeare while in high school d) the fact that students only read shakespeare’s greatest works in school and thus never see his weaknesses
