Rainsford heard a gunshot. He then walks out and looks out on the dark night and suddenly he drops his pipe when he reaches for it he falls off his yacht. He tried to swim toward the yacht as he realized he could not catch up so he stopped swimming and he started swimming to the island he heard gunshots from. As he got to the island he had fallen asleep, when he woke he found a 22 cartridge, so he looked for a trail from hunting boots and he found a house. He then walked to the door and knocked and no one came so he knocked again and finally a big man came to the door rainsford explained the situation. The man didn't care and held a gun at Rainsford. Zarroff then gave him a room and later at dinner Zarroff offered a new game to hunt, Rainsford politely turned him down. Zarroff insisted that he hunt rainsford. Zarroff let Rainsford have three days to win. As they hunted each other, Rainsford won
