By the 1890s, the growing cycling craze had brought the idea of rational dress front and center. Repeated injuries to women riding in long, full skirts propelled female cyclists to look for new clothing options and others to at least consider the need for them. But for every suggestion of a cycling outfit that was comfortable and safe, there seemed to be a corresponding warning to women not to overstep their bounds.

Thanks in large part to cycling, the innovations of rational dress reformers were starting to take effect by the end of the 1890s. Corsets were on their way out, dresses were getting shorter, and women no longer wore the heavy, bulky undergarments that gave them round, unnatural shapes. These changes went a long way toward unburdening women and setting the stage for them to be healthier and more active in the coming century.
