As the race progresses, the sides of the roads are lined with millions of spectators, each hoping to catch a
glimpse of the famed yellow jersey which is worn by the current race leader.
And aside from those who can physically attend, a combined audience of more than three billion people watch
le Tour on TV across nearly 190 countries.
It has existed for more than a century and within France it is seen as an emblem of the country itself.
