A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works, a symbol can express an idea, clarify the meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. In the book "Their Eyes were watching god" focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole.

I’m not gonna write your essay, and i can’t help much bc my class is only at ch 8, but a really big symbol in the book would be the pear tree. it comes up multiple times in the novel and symbolizes janies sexuality as well as her innocence, among other things. the tree would be a good topic to write your essay about bc it appears many time in the novel, but the mule is also a good symbolic thing in the book. whatever you choose to write about, good luck!!!
