Which sentence is the best summary of paragraph 2 of the passage? Today's Griots
In West African tradition, the griot is the village library. But
the griot is also a person. Instead of books, the griot
keeps
stories.
West African peoples were once ruled by warrior kings.
They knew history was important. Before writing was used
to record history, the warrior kings needed griots to keep
history alive. Griots sang and told stories at births,
weddings, and holidays. They told of wars and brave
deeds. They told stories to remember the dead. Their
stories could be funny or sad. Usually griots told traditional
stories word for word. But they added news of the day.
They told their ideas about history. Griots could speak for
hours and even days. They had an important role in village
life.
Griot tradition is the father of hip-hop. In America, today's
griots are also the warrior kings of modern music. They are
DJs, MCs, and rappers. In the early 1970s, the airwaves
were full of sugary dance music. Then young people just
said no to music that seemed fake and empty of meaning.
They said yes to hip-hop.
These young people wanted music with an edge. Hip-hop
told stories of life on the street. Rappers became the new
griots. These warrior poets were armed with quick wits,
sharp tongues, rhymes, and beats. Rappers told a new kind of truth. Some songs told of modern social problems. Some rappers did write empty and fake music. But others used music to light the way for social change.
Now young west African griots mix bits of hip-hop, jazz, and modern themes of social change together with traditional stories. This trend worries some, but others know that change will keep the griot tradition alive.

A. Griots in west Africa told stories about wars and the day’s news.
B. Griots in west Africa could speak for a long time.
C. Griots in west Africa must have been interesting, intelligent people.
D. Griots in west Africa kept village history and culture alive.
