The Long Night” by Steve Vance commences with the main character, Bobby, and his family taking a trip to the hospital. Bobby’s brother and sister, Phil and Cathy, laid in the back seat fast asleep. Meanwhile, Bobby’s father sleepily drove the car, Bobby’s mother was holding him while trying to resist dozing off. It was a dark night with not a light left on. Everyone in the city had already begun hibernating. There was nothing to be heard, but the engine of the car taking Bobby and his family to the hospital. Bobby suffered from insomnia, so while everyone should have been sleeping, he could not find the strength to. When Bobby and his family arrived at the hospital, the doctor administered a sedative to help him sleep, but before she could administer the full dosage, she herself had fallen asleep. When Bobby woke up shortly after he began to wonder around. It must have felt like he lived in the world alone. Suddenly, Bobby began to hear strange noises coming from above him. He took the elevator to the rooftop and saw a space craft shooting off into the sky. In his mind he heard a voice in another language stating that they had successfully invaded earth, but right after Bobby had scared them off using his thoughts. Bobby was not the hero the people deserved, but the one they needed. Bobby saw his insomnia as a flaw, but in the end, it helped him save all of humanity from an alien invasion. I believe this story was made to portray that everything happens for a reason whether we like it or not.
