Carving a pumpkin is a festive October tradition for many families. First, you need to choose a pumpkir that has a flat bottom and will stand up properly, Pumpkins come in many shapes and sizes. Grocery
stores sell pumpkins, but you might enjoy going to a pumpkin patch where you will have more options fo
the shape and size of your pumpkin.
Begin by spreading the newspaper on a table or other surface area where you will carve your pumpkin
Place the pumpkin on top of the newspaper. Make your lid by drawing a circle around the stem. Then,
draw a face on the front of your pumpkin with the permanent marker. It is helpful if you practice your
jack-o'-lantern's face on a sheet of paper before you draw on the actual pumpkin. Draw triangles for th
eyes and nose. Once you have drawn your face on the pumpkin, get an adult to help you cut along the
line around the stem. Be sure the opening is big enough for your hand to fit through. Use your hands anc
a spoon to scoop out all of the seeds and slimy, stringy pumpkin guts! Separate the seeds from the other
gunk for toasting. With an adult's help, cut along the line for the face and pop out the eyes, nose, and
mouth. Finally, have an adult help you place a tea light candle inside the pumpkin, Tea lights or votive
candles are good candles because they are already so short, they probably won't fall over. Cut a small
hole in the lid where the smoke comes out, so your pumpkin doesn't begin baking!
