The Paragraph
Throughout history both Africans and African-Americans have faced oppression and discrimination. Hughes emphasizes the events of the past
and the present. Ancient Egypt is contrasted with modern America--the pyramids and the Woolworth Building. The extreme violence of racism is
described in the atrocities committed in the Belgian Congo and in Hughes' time with a lynching in Texas. So, individuals have suffered across time.
