The drama The Crucible is a fictionalized version of the Salem Witch Trials. While the names of people in the play are real, and the events of the witch hysteria in Salem, MA did occur, the author Arthur Miller created the dilemma for John Proctor. The real Abigail Williams was only eleven years old at the time of the trials, and she did not have any romantic relationship with the real John Proctor. How might the play have been different if Miller had not created this realtionship? How does this relationship effect the drama? Explain and use examples from the text.
