In the "Elsewhere", the author uses a set of literary devices and techniques to establish a setting that helps convey Zita’s complex perspective. McClure uses imageries such as "Zita’s skin pric kles against a breath of wind" and "The fragile  thread sways rhythmically in the breeze" to bring the readers' attention to minute details in the story.

She uses similes such as "Silent as a field mouse" to portray Zita's secret endeavor into the orchards early in the mornings. The author puts a lot of focus on non-human elements in the story to help the readers understand Zita's perspective of seeing the world.
