(1)Farmers have been trying to keep hungry birds out of their crops for centuries, the first
scarecrow was invented for this reason. (2) Small birds destroy thousands of dollars' worth of
crops each year and farmers are forced to fight back to protect their crops. (3) Chemicals
effectively ward off birds but they are capable of harming the crops. (4) Some farmers have even
tried to scare the pesky birds with noise from cannon fire! (5) Recently, however, a group of
farmers tried something new they brought in even bigger birds, falcons, to frighten the smaller
birds away. (6) Falcons are cheaper than chemicals and less frightening than cannon fire. (7)
Falcons are birds of prey when a smaller bird sees one. (8)It flies away. (9) Falcons are not only
helpful in the fields they are used in airports and landfills too. (10) At landfills, falcons frighten
scavenger birds and other small wildlife away from the refuse and at airports the falcons are used
to keep the runways clear of flocks of birds.
