The  contest by Revolutionaries was to gain independence from Britain.  Britain had earlier imposed taxes on the colonists without representation.  This was not welcomed by the colonists, who vehemently protested against the taxes.  But the British monarchy refused to listen to protests.  Under the Boston Tea Party, these revolutionaries gathered to fight for independence.  They were later provoked to take up arms against Britain following British declaration of war.
