What are some of the circumstances that caused Jove to agree that Calypso must release Ulysses? As the gods met in council before Jove, their joint influence and authority overrode Jove's unwillingness to act in Ulysses's behalf.
Minerva argued and begged so persuasively that Jove agreed.
Mercury offered to be the messenger to Calypso, and the other gods all began arguing forcefully in Ulysses's behalf, so Jove had to
yield to their wishes.
The suitors were so close to carrying out their plot to murder Telemachus that Jove became worried they would succeed if he
didn't interfere.
Jove's response to Minerva indicates that he had in some ways misunderstood her reasoning toward Ulysses, and so he
immediately agreed with her request, ordering Mercury to carry out his order.
