Heathcliff

Heathcliff is the main character in the story. He is a young orphan brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw. A rivalry develops between Mr. Earnshaw's son, Hindley, and Heathcliff because Hindley feels that Mr. Earnshaw loves the adopted orphan more than his own son. Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw develop a close bond as they grow up together. When Catherine chooses to marry Edgar Linton, Heathcliff runs away from home. When he returns after three years, he is a wealthy man who is determined to destroy the Earnshaws and the Lintons. He manipulates events to gain control of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.

He is a devoted, passionate lover who becomes almost inhuman in seeking revenge on all who wronged him. He comes across as bitter, sullen, and depressed through most of the second half of the story.

Hindley

Mr. Earnshaw's son, Hindley, develops a hatred for Heathcliff from the very beginning. He goes to London to attend college and comes back to Wuthering Heights with his wife, Frances, for his father's funeral. When he becomes the master of Wuthering Heights, he moves Heathcliff from the house to the servants' quarters and reduces him to a common farm laborer.

Hindley is jealous by nature and always imposes his superiority on people of lower social rank.

Catherine

Mr. Earnshaw's daughter, Catherine, is sympathetic to Heathcliff. She is his childhood companion, and they fall deeply in love. However, Catherine shocks and hurts Heathcliff when she chooses to marry Edgar Linton to become the "greatest woman in the neighborhood." Her actions lead Heathcliff to disappear for three years and are presumably his chief motive for seeking to destroy both the Linton and Earnshaw families.

Catherine is a free spirit who loves to break rules of conduct to explore the moors; she is headstrong and stubborn and loves Heathcliff passionately, but she ends that romance and turns to safe and dispassionate Edgar Linton.

younger Catherine

The younger Catherine is referred to as Cathy and is Catherine and Edgar Linton's daughter. She is ill-tempered and rude, and she has inherited her mother's good looks. Heathcliff forces her to marry his son, Linton, so that he can become the master of Thrushcross Grange as well. However, Linton dies soon after the marriage, and Cathy falls in love with Hareton.

Edgar

Edgar Linton lives in Thrushcross Grange. He is a gentleman who manages to woo Catherine Earnshaw. Catherine marries Edgar to become the mistress of Thrushcross Grange.

Isabella

Isabella is Edgar Linton's sister. She is weak and sickly. Heathcliff marries her to take revenge on Catherine and mistreats her. She flees to London to escape Heathcliff's torture and gives birth to their son, Linton, there.

Lockwood

Lockwood is the tenant who rents Thrushcross Grange from Heathcliff. He asks Nelly to tell him more about the inhabitants and the history of Wuthering Heights after he has a strange nightmare at the manor. He is a city-bred person who does not fit into the landscape of the moors, and he has rented Thrushcross Grange to recover from the pangs of a broken heart. He is the first narrator of the story.

Nelly

Nelly works as a housekeeper in Wuthering Heights. She is sympathetic to Heathcliff and Catherine and is a witness to all that unfolds at Wuthering Heights and in the lives of Heathcliff and Catherine. Nelly is one of the narrators in Wuthering Heights, and the story she tells Lockwood is colored with her feelings for the characters.

Hareton is the son of Hindley and Frances. He loses his mother a few years after his birth, and his father takes to alcohol. Heathcliff treats Hareton badly after the death of his parents, making him ill-mannered in some of the same ways Heathcliff has been. Hareton is forced to work as a servant at Wuthering Heights and he is denied an education. Eventually, he falls in love with the younger Catherine and plans to marry her.

Linton is the son of Isabella and Heathcliff. Born and raised in London, he is sickly and weak like her. Linton returns to live with his father, Heathcliff, after his mother's death. He never really gets any affection from his father, who uses him to gain control of Thrushcross Grange.
