What does the irony in these excerpts from “In Another Country” by Ernest Hemingway convey?

Modern technology aided war efforts by providing horrific weapons, but it couldn’t help the soldiers. It is ironic that modern technology could create such weapons but is not able to help these men regain any sort of normalcy after the war. The truth is that these men have been very gravely injured in the war, and it is unlikely they will ever be able to go back to normal. They certainly won't be playing football or even just running like they were able to do before the war. The machines that they are hooked up to in the hospital will not be able to restore them to health. Sadly, the technology used for weapons is far superior to the technology used to heal.
