Now that you have had the opportunity to read and discuss “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” I would like you to respond to the quote at the end of the script: The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices—to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children . . . the children yet unborn. Do you agree with this quote? Why or why not? Respond to all or a specific part of this quote in a well-written and well-organized essay. In your essay, you must do the following: Include a thesis statement that clearly outlines why you do or do not agree with this quote. Analyze two specific examples from the script that support your claim. You must include direct quotes from the script to support your discussions of these two examples. In discussing these examples, explain how reading each example aloud contributed to your understanding of it. Discuss two specific examples from your life or from the life of someone you know that support your claim. Describe each example in detail and clearly demonstrate how each example supports your claim. Include at least one reference to your group discussion in your essay. This reference must describe in detail something your group discussed or a group member’s response to one of the questions in the discussion sheet. As in your argumentative essay, address a possible counterclaim to your claim. Why might someone disagree with you? What would be the strengths of their arguments? As you evaluate this counterclaim, consider the strengths and weaknesses of both your claim and the counterclaim. Your essay should be at least two pages, double-spaced, in length. You must use 12-point Times New Roman font, and your margins may not be larger than 1 inch on each side.
