people believe that it is. Indeed, pieces by the most famous street artists can be found in museums and
auction houses around the world. However, others maintain that even the most masterful street art is
no more than an illegal, destructive act. Detractors certainly have a point: street art is illegal. When
someone paints where she does not have permission to paint, she is breaking the law-it does not
matter if she has scrawled profanity or recreated the Mona Lisa. Illegal street art is certainly a problem
in many cities, but eliminating it completely would deprive people of some of the most brilliant,
thought-provoking art being made today. Perhaps the best solution is for cities to create special areas
where street artists can practice their art legally. Cities could designate certain bridges, tunnels, or
public buildings as legal areas for street artists to paint. Doing so would not only give street artists a
place to display their talents, it might also reduce the amount of illegal vandalism in other places.
