Why did the United States and Soviet Union fight over Korea and Vietnam? They were trying to protect the civilians from violence. They were trying to prove who was stronger and which was better, capitalism or communism, by having their side control the entire country The US wanted to involve the people of Vietnam and Korea in the future of their country, including whether or not it was capitalist or communist. The USSR did not. Korea and Vietnam are very valuable countries with a lot of land and natural resources to fight over.
